Palm Springs has been the desert playground for decades. Hollywood made its way out in the 1940s and 50s. The modernism era had begun and has given us many classics over the years. Architecture, legends, and timelessness go hand-in-hand. Another classic that we all have come to love is food, and there’s one spot in downtown Palm Springs that has seen it all through the years.
Opening its doors in the early 1960s, Sherman’s Deli is a fantastic NYC-style deli serving kosher fare from morning to night, with daily specials, the famous sandwich board, plus numerous specialty cakes and other baked goods. Today, there are two locations, the one in downtown Palm Springs and the second location in Palm Desert. Each location is open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., six days a week (closed on Tuesday).
Plan your visit accordingly though as there’s always a wait from what I’ve heard. During my visit, I think I waited about 30 minutes for breakfast during the later morning hours. However, wait or no wait, you’ll see the crew hustling about the restaurant. The food was great, but the part that I think I loved the most was the fact that the staff treated everyone like they were a local that had been coming to Sherman’s for years. I guess it’s that NYC-style deli feeling that they’ve got going for themselves. From that “whatcha havin’?” to the plate of pickles on the table, you can’t go wrong with any meal here.
Since it was a late weekend breakfast, well, almost lunch, but still breakfast if that makes sense, I went with the Ortega Omelette that is filled with green chilies, tomatoes, sour cream, bell peppers, jack cheese, and avocado. It’s served with breakfast potatoes and your choice of a bagel or toast. It was filled and a great way to start off my Saturday before wandering about Palm Springs. The hustle and bustle along with the conversations all about the restaurant made for an overall great experience. On your next visit to Palm Springs, make sure to include Sherman’s Deli in your plans.
